Celsius to Fahrenheit

Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, offset and all, with oven temperatures.

This is arithmetic done in the page. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Temperature is the one conversion on this site that is not a multiplication. Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zeros as well as different step sizes, so the formula is multiply by 9/5 and then add 32 — and skipping the second half is the mistake that turns 20 °C into 36 °F instead of 68 °F.

More about Celsius to Fahrenheit

Cooking is where it bites hardest, because oven temperatures are large numbers where a proportional error is enormous. A recipe calling for 180 °C is 356 °F, which is why American recipes say 350 °F and British ones say 180 °C for the same oven. Get the conversion wrong and you are 150 degrees out, which is the difference between baking and burning.

Weather and body temperature are the everyday uses. Normal body temperature is 37 °C or 98.6 °F; a fever at 38.5 °C is 101.3 °F. Room temperature at 20 °C is 68 °F, freezing is 0 °C or 32 °F, and a hot day at 35 °C is 95 °F.

One point worth keeping: minus 40 is the same number on both scales. It is the single temperature where the two lines cross, and it is a useful sanity check on any converter, including this one.

  • Handles the offset as well as the scale, so 0 °C is not treated as 0 °F
  • Kelvin and Rankine offered alongside for scientific work
  • Refuses anything below absolute zero rather than showing a number
  • Oven, body and weather temperatures given in the text
  • Swap button for either direction

How to use it

  1. 1Type the temperature in Celsius.
  2. 2Read the Fahrenheit value as it updates.
  3. 3Swap the direction to convert Fahrenheit back to Celsius.
  4. 4Take kelvin from the table below if you need the absolute scale.

Questions

What is the formula?

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. Going the other way, subtract 32 first and then multiply by 5/9.

What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?

It is 356 °F, which is why recipes round it to 350 °F. A 200 °C oven is 392 °F and 220 °C is 428 °F.

What temperature is the same on both scales?

Minus 40. It is the one point where the two scales cross, and a good check on any converter.

What is a normal body temperature in Fahrenheit?

About 98.6 °F, which is 37 °C. A 38.5 °C fever is 101.3 °F.

Why can I not enter a temperature below -273.15 °C?

Because nothing can be colder than absolute zero, so the tool reports it as an error rather than converting it. That point is 0 K or -459.67 °F.
